The history of this town began in the 13th century, when the King of Spain granted the monks land to build a monastery. It was here that the Carthusian Monastery was built and the town was formed at its foot.
INTERESTING FACT!
In the middle of the 19th century, the Spanish government decided to close all the monasteries, auction them off and expel all religious orders from the island. Upon learning of this, every resident of Valldemossa made a financial contribution and through the efforts of the townspeople the Cartesian monastery was purchased by the town itself.
For a long time Valldemossa has remained very popular among vacationers because of the town’s remoteness from the bustling cities. The atmosphere here is calm and peaceful. By the way, walking along the streets of Valldemossa, you cannot fail to notice the huge number of pots with flowers hanging on the walls. This custom went back to the times when there were no window sills, many centuries have passed, and this tradition is preserved and makes this city colorful, bright and blooming.
Valldemossa, the Cartesian monastery and Chopin.
Valldemossa is also famous for being the one-time home of the Polish composer Chopin and his companion George Sand. They came here in search of good weather and a healing climate, as Chopin was ill with tuberculosis. But alas, they were met with rain, cold and isolation from people. Georges Sand wrote about her impressions of life in Mallorca at that time in her book “Winter in Mallorca”. And Chopin composed several famous preludes and pieces during his time there, such as the famous “Raindrops”. The couple lived in the former cells of the Cartesian monastery, because no one wanted to rent an apartment to this scandalously famous couple (according to the locals). Many belongings of Chopin and George Sand are still kept in this monastery and are available for tourists. There is a beautiful garden nearby where you can take a walk and escape the summer heat for a while.
