MAGALUF ON A MAP OF MAJORCA
On the map of the island, Magaluf is located in the southwestern part of the island. The capital Palma de Mallorca and Magaluf are separated by only 15 km of road. To get from the airport to this resort, you will have to overcome 25 km of scenic road.
HISTORY OF POPULARITY OF THE CITY OF MAGALUF
This town was a favorite destination for British tourists in the 1960s. Magaluf owes its current tourist popularity to Tom Cook. And here’s why. For decades, the British have had a tradition, a sort of initiation into adulthood. When a teenager becomes an adult, the young company goes on vacation to Spain to get drunk and party like adults, away from the control of parents. Somewhere from the 90’s of the last century British youth for vacation chose Benidorm and Lloret de Mar. But one day Tom Cook’s travel company offered tolerable prices for a vacation in Mallorca. That’s when the popularity of Mallorca’s coastal resort of Magaluf began.
For an average of 300 euros, Cook’s company offered a flight from the UK and accommodation. Often on an all-inclusive basis, including alcohol. Magaluf became a very popular resort. Crowds of Britons were coming here. Cook’s company had recently launched a low-cost travel offer and created Smartline hotels. They were more budget than the rest of the accommodation offered by the tour operator. Therefore, the number of young “low-cost” tourists has increased in recent years. Magaluf has become known as a partying, drinking town with a busy nightlife.
A BLOW FOR MAJORCA AND FOR TOURISM
In 2019, unexpected news hit the Balearic Islands. Thomas Cook’s company had collapsed. In addition to housing, Cook owned his own fleet of airplanes and rental cars. His branches in Mallorca employed around 700 employees, who were also struck suddenly, like lightning, by the news of the company’s collapse. The economic losses for the 2019 season are estimated at 100 million euros. Mallorca was home to 18 of the 200 hotels that belonged to Cook’s company. No one could have imagined that the oldest tourist company in the world with a 178-year history, which managed to survive two world wars, would close so suddenly. The inventor of Mallorca’s tourism binge has died.
CULTURE AND ATTRACTIONS OF THE RESORT
Despite its not-so-good reputation, Magaluf is a well-protected area and recently there has been a lot of investment to transform the town and take it to the next level. Like the island’s capital Palma de Mallorca, Magaluf boasts many family-friendly attractions. Most of them are close to the beach. On the promenade there are various bars and restaurants, stores of all kinds. For example, the well-known Nikki Beach Club, suitable for daytime recreation. You can enjoy a Mediterranean dinner and sip a few cocktails by the pool at Zhero Boathouse Beach Club. Is Mallorca worth visiting in any season? In winter, life in this area, as in most of the island, comes to a standstill and becomes unhurried. Nevertheless, there are tourists who prefer the low season for their vacation. The weather in winter is warm, with almost no rain. You can go hiking, sit on an empty beach and admire the sunsets going into the sea.
