In the city of Palma and on the island of Mallorca in general, there are a large number of sights and places that you need and want to visit, but which often charge entrance fees. However, almost everywhere there are days when you can enjoy all this beauty for free.
Of course, you will have to plan your vacation carefully and adjust to the schedule of most attractions. But a budget traveler will be able to see these famous Mallorca sites and save their budget at the same time.
Interesting places in Palma de Mallorca that you can visit for free:
- Castillo de San Carlos in the city of Palma.
You simply must visit this place. Because of its location (it is far from the center of Palma), this castle-museum is little known. It is a fortification that has been protecting the bay of Porto Pi for a long time. At the moment, the Castillo de San Carlos is located within the Portopi Naval Base.
Now this castle houses the Palma Military History Museum with a huge collection of different weapons of different countries and centuries. Climbing to the top of the castle you will have a beautiful view of the sea, the port and the city of Palma. There is a cafe, a parking lot and sanitary facilities on the territory. If you are traveling with children, you can take food for the donkeys that live on the territory of the museum.
You can visit the Palma Military Museum Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
2. Belver Castle.
Read about the history and features of this castle in our separate one an article about Belver Castle. Known to all tourists for its uniqueness and beautiful views, Belver Castle charges an entrance fee on normal days. It is free of charge on Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00.
3. Marivent Gardens.
These royal gardens became open to the public only a few years ago. They are located near the town of Palma and surround the royal residence with their trees and flowerbeds. They can be visited free of charge while the royal family is not in the palace. In that case, they are open Monday through Sunday from 9:00 to 16:30 (October through April 30) and 9:00 to 20:00 (May 1 through September 30).
4. Palma City Council.
Don’t let the idea of visiting Palma City Hall bore you, as this tour of the City Council will redefine your entire idea of this institution. The decoration of the City Council is so rich and varied that you will want to return there again. You can sign up for a tour of the Palma de Mallorca City Council by emailing visites@palma.cat. It takes place on Sundays.
Schedule changes are possible during the pandemic, so check in advance. Before the pandemic, it was possible to visit Palma City Hall in Catalan, Spanish and English. But even if you don’t understand any of them, still don’t miss the opportunity to visit there.
5. Almudaina Palace.

Half of this palace is still in operation and serves the royal family for negotiations. The other half of the palace is open to the public. Free entrance for residents and EU citizens is possible every Wednesday and Thursday from 15:00 to 18:00 (October to March) and from 17:00 to 20:00 (April to September).
6. Juan Miró Museum.
Some of Juan Miró’s works are displayed in the Marivent Gardens. Many paintings and sculptures also decorate the homes of wealthy people. You can see a collection of his works at the Fundacio Miro Mallorca Museum on Saturdays from 3 to 6 pm, on the first Sunday of the month from 10 am to 3 pm, as well as March 1, May 18, June 24, December 19 and 31. Monday is a day off. Children under 16 years of age are admitted free of charge on any day.
7. Porto P. Lighthouse.
The Porto Pi Lighthouse in Palma de Mallorca is the third oldest operating lighthouse in the world. It was inaugurated in 1300 and has been lit for 600 years using olive oil. The lighthouse is located on a 38-meter high stone tower. Given its importance, this lighthouse was declared a historical and artistic monument in 1983. The museum’s permanent exhibition is one of the best collections of materials and equipment used for lighting and maritime signaling currently in Europe.
