Hiking in Mallorca: Alaro Castle

Home >> About Majorca >> Пешие прогулки на Майорке: замок Аларо

A hike along the mountain paths will be a nice change from everyday life. We suggest you head towards the Alaro Castle.

He’s not as well-preserved as Belver amok, but the reward is still a vast panorama from a great height.

Alaro Castle is located on a mountain peak near the town of Alaro. This place is worth visiting because of the magnificent views and panoramas from the summit. You will also find the remains of an ancient fortification that in the Middle Ages was a refuge from pirates who invaded the island of Mallorca.

And everything is good in this place! The pleasant fatigue of the climb up, the refreshing invigorating smell of the forest, and the tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the city. But the most important and best part of this hike to Alaro Castle is the feeling of freedom and grace as you climb to the top and see the bays from Palma de Mallorca to Alcudia, birds soaring between the beautiful Sierra de Tramuntana mountains.

History of Alaro Castle

The peak itself, which contains the remains of the Alaro Castle in Mallorca, is at an altitude of 822 meters. From this height you can see most of the island of Mallorca.

Despite the high elevation, the road to Alaro Peak is not very hard. Even with small children, you can get up to the castle without getting exhausted. The summit itself is a mountain with very vertical walls and densely planted vegetation. Thanks to all this, the place was practically inaccessible to invaders in the Middle Ages.

Alaro Castle was built in 902 for protection against the Moors, who eventually conquered Mallorca. The Muslims did not succeed in capturing the castle. Its inhabitants surrendered only after they had exhausted their food supplies. History says that the inhabitants of the castle were able to withstand the defense for 8 years.

After centuries, the place was used for religious purposes.
Unfortunately, there is no very interesting story about this castle. But still, the story would have been overshadowed one way or another, because the main thing about the climb to Alaro Castle is the stunning views.

We strongly insist that you bring water and food with you. There are wooden tables and benches at the very top in the shade of a huge tree that spreads its wide branches to shelter people from the heat. There is also a small bar where you can have tea/coffee and some snacks.

Getting to Alaro Castle

To get to Alaro Castle you will need a car. From Palma de Mallorca, take the direction towards Inca. Before reaching Inca, turn towards Benissalem and Alaro. At the beginning of the town of Alaro there is a sign for the castle.

You can leave your car at the very bottom, without even entering the mountains. But it is better to leave your vehicle in the middle of the road at the Es Verger restaurant. It’s a 45-minute hike through the mountain forests from here to the castle.
Important! If you take a stroller, prepare to carry both the baby and the stroller in your hands.

If you don’t have transportation, but really want to wander in the mountain forests and get up high, book a transfer and we will get you as quickly and as close to Alaro Castle as possible.

By the way, throughout the year you can stay overnight at Alaro Peak. This place can accommodate up to 30 people in dorm rooms. Despite the height and remoteness from the city, guests have access to wifi and heating, as well as a shared lounge with fireplace.
There is also a weather station on the peak at Alaro Castle, which transmits weather observations to Mallorca’s main station to forecast the weather on the island.
