Home >> About Majorca >> Cape Formentor
Cap de Formentor is probably one of the most famous and visited places on the island of Mallorca. You have probably heard of it before. Its pictures are often found on postcards and souvenirs. Firstly, it is the northernmost point of the island.
The road to it lies from the port of Polliensa and is a 13-kilometer serpentine with very picturesque scenery. Secondly, if you choose the direction towards the cape, you can visit not only the Mirador d’es Colomer, located on the edge of the cliff at an altitude of about 300 meters.
TWO PATHS TO CHOOSE FROM
From the observation deck, there are two more roads to choose from, one leading up to the tower and one leading down to the beach and lighthouse.
The Talaia d’Albercutx tower was built at a height of 390 meters in the distant 16th century. The view from this height fascinates even the most sophisticated travelers. From here you can see the Hotel Formentor, the beach and the bay of Polliensa.
The famous Formentor beach
Formentor beach is considered one of the best beaches on the island of Mallorca, with fine sand, crystal clear water and beautiful scenery. The mountain panoramas of this place are a favorite among tourists. There are paths and special observation platforms along the cliffs. The five-star Barcelo Formentor hotel is located nearby and world celebrities often stay here. There is a paid parking lot near the beach, its cost is 6 EUR for the whole day. But due to its huge popularity it is quite difficult to find a place on this beach.
The active Formentor lighthouse
For your information, the Cap de Formentor Lighthouse (Faro de Formentor) was built in the 19th century. Its construction was considered difficult due to the inaccessibility of the area and lasted 6 years. The lighthouse started operating for the first time on April 30, 1863. Olive oil was initially used as fuel. Later it was replaced by paraffin and then by gasoline. Now the lighthouse is automated and runs on solar panels. There is a cafe in the middle of the lighthouse. From here, from 200 meters above sea level, you can see the cape and the bay itself, and along the way there are observation decks with views of Mallorca, the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Colomer.
How to get to Formentor
The most convenient way to get to the observation deck, the lighthouse, the tower and the beach is by car. Please note that the mountain road to these places, although perfectly smooth, is very steep. It requires good driving experience to get there safely and comfortably. Or you could book a transfer and an experienced driver will get you there safely.
